Premium vs. Regular Gas
June 6, 2024
Many people ask us, "Will using premium gas make my car run better?"
Let's break it down and see what premium gasoline is all about.

What is Premium Gasoline?
Gasoline comes in different grades, which are determined by their octane ratings. Regular gas has the lowest octane rating (86-87), while premium gas has the highest (91-93). Most gas stations also offer a mid-grade option that falls in between (88-90). The exact octane range can vary depending on where you live because of altitude differences.
Why Do Engines Need Different Octane Ratings?
Different engines need different octane ratings based on their design. For example, turbocharged engines usually require premium gas. There's a sticker on your gas tank filler lid that tells you the minimum octane rating your car's manufacturer recommends.
How to Choose the Right Gasoline for Your Car
To find out what kind of gasoline your engine needs, you can:
Check the Sticker:
Look at the gas tank filler lid for the recommended octane rating.
Read the Owner’s Manual:
It will tell you if it’s okay to use lower grades of gasoline. Some cars can adapt to lower grades, but they might lose some performance. Other engines might get damaged if you use a lower grade, which can lead to costly repairs.
Your car will run best on the grade of gasoline recommended by the manufacturer. Using a higher grade than recommended won’t give you any extra performance or better fuel economy.
Important Tips
Detergents in Gasoline:
All grades of gasoline have detergents that help keep your engine clean. This means your engine will be protected no matter what grade of fuel you use.
Knocking or Pinging Sounds:
If you hear knocking or pinging from your engine, take it seriously. It could mean your car needs a tune-up or other repairs. Bring your vehicle to David's Automotive Repair if you notice these sounds.

While most people think cold kills batteries, extreme heat actually wears them down faster. Nobody wants to be stuck with a dead battery in a hot parking lot or on the side of the road. Let us help you stay powered up and ready for wherever summer takes you.

Belts keep systems like your alternator and power steering working. Hoses carry important fluids like coolant and help your engine stay at the right temperature. Over time, heat and wear can cause them to crack , fray , or leak . If a belt breaks or a hose bursts while you’re driving, it could lead to engine damage or even leave you stuck on the side of the road. That’s why it’s smart to have them checked regularly—especially before long trips or hot summer days. If you’re unsure about the condition of your belts and hoses, we’re here to help with a quick check. Call 972-625-1836 to make a reservation to have your belts and hoses inspected by a certified technician.

High temperatures can cause fluids to thin out , break down faster, or even evaporate —putting your car at risk for overheating or part failure. If your coolant is low, your engine can overheat. If your oil is dirty or your transmission fluid is old, important parts may not be properly protected. The summer heat makes staying on top of fluid checks more important than ever. At David’s Automotive Repair, we’ll inspect all your fluids to make sure your vehicle is ready to take on the summer. Call 972-625-1836 or go online to reserve your visit.
