What Should Every Student Keep in Their Vehicle?
School is back, and that means your student will spend more time behind the wheel. Whether they are driving to high school, college, work, or sports practice, it's a good idea to make sure they are ready for the unexpected.

A few simple items can make a big difference if something goes wrong. They won't prevent every problem, but they can help your student stay safe while waiting for help.
A Phone Charger
A dead phone can make a small problem much worse. Keep a charging cable in the vehicle so your student can always call for help if they need it.
If they are driving a long distance to college, bringing a car charger is even better.
A Roadside Safety Kit
Every student should keep a small roadside safety kit in their vehicle. You hope they never need it, but it can make a stressful situation much easier.
A good roadside safety kit should include:
- Flashlight
- Jumper cables
- Tire pressure gauge
- Reflective warning triangles or road flares
- Basic first aid kit
- Work gloves
- Bottled water
- Small blanket
- Phone charger
These items don't take up much room, but they can be a big help if your student has a flat tire, a dead battery, or has to wait for roadside assistance.
Emergency Contact Information
Make sure your student knows who to call if something happens. Keep important phone numbers in their phone and write them on a card in the glove box.
If they are going away to college, remind them to save the phone number for a trusted repair shop near campus, too.
Check the Tire Pressure
Low tire pressure is one of the most common problems drivers face. Tires that are low on air can wear out faster and make the vehicle harder to control.
Check the tire pressure at least once a month and before any long trip. It only takes a few minutes and can help your tires last longer.
A Vehicle That Has Been Inspected
The most important thing your student can take to school is a vehicle that has been checked by a professional. Before school starts, have the brakes, tires, battery, cooling system, lights, and fluids inspected. Finding a worn part now is much easier than dealing with a breakdown on the way to class.
If your student is leaving for college, it may be months before they come home again. Taking the time to have the vehicle inspected before move-in day can help you feel better when they pull out of the driveway.
Schedule a Back-to-School Vehicle Inspection
Getting your student's vehicle ready for the school year doesn't have to be difficult. A simple inspection can help lower the chance of a breakdown and keep them driving safely all semester.
