How Do I Check My Car’s Transmission Fluid?

Checking your car’s transmission fluid is an important part of keeping your vehicle in good shape. The transmission fluid keeps your gears shifting smoothly and prevents overheating.

To check it, make sure your car is parked on a flat surface with the parking brake engaged. For most cars, the engine should be running while you check the fluid, but it’s always best to refer to your owner’s manual.

Open the hood and locate the transmission fluid dipstick, which is usually near the back of the engine, labeled, and typically red. Pull the dipstick out, wipe it clean, and then reinsert it fully. Pull it out again to see where the fluid level is. It should fall between the "min" and "max" marks. Healthy transmission fluid is pinkish or red and should not have a burnt smell. If the fluid appears dark or smells burnt, it may need to be replaced.

Keep in mind that not all vehicles have a dipstick for checking transmission fluid. Some modern cars require a professional technician to check the fluid using specialized tools. If your vehicle doesn’t have a dipstick, refer to your owner’s manual for guidance or bring it to a trusted repair shop.

If the fluid is low, you might need to add more, but only use the type recommended for your car. If you notice strange noises, slipping gears, or leaks, it’s a good idea to have your car checked by a professional technician.
